Obsidian’s massive RPG, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, is no longer coming to Switch.
Publisher Versus Evil made this announcement in its official Discord, stating that it has canceled the Switch version of this RPG first released in 2018 on PC and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2020. The studio kept the news brief and opted not to expand on why the Switch version had been canceled.
Versus Evil cited the Switch’s hardware as the reason for this decision, stating it had, “reached a limit on what we can do with our updates to the game and have exhausted the options left to us from the PC original in regards to the limitations of the hardware we are working with”.
This decision not to bring Pillars of Eternity 2 to the Switch may be to free up more time or resources for Obsidian’s upcoming Avowed. While not a lot is known about the first-person fantasy RPG, it is set to take on big games in the genre like The Elder Scrolls and Oblivion. Recent interviews and leaks point to an early 2023 release for the game, so the studio may be allocating all of its resources to hit that target timeframe.
It is not clear if the Switch’s hardware limitations are the reason for Versus Evil’s decision to no longer bring Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire to Nintendo’s hybrid console.
